FUEL CONSUMPTION UNIT MEASUREMENT

The fuel consumption or fuel economy of an automobile is the fuel efficiency relationship between the distance traveled and the amount of fuel consumed by the vehicle. Consumption can be expressed in terms of volume of fuel to travel a distance, or the distance travelled per unit volume of fuel consumed.

Fuel consumption is expressed in liters per 100 kilometers (L/100 km). Liters per mil are used in Norway and Sweden. In the USA, fuel economy is expressed in miles per gallon (mpg) and usually also in the UK (imperial gallon); there is sometimes confusion as the imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon so that mpg values are not directly comparable.
